Unreal

Have you ever seen paintings of a sunset where all you could say was “seriously”? I’m thinking of “velvet paintings” but even some oils from the 19th century. The contrasting colours are vivid to the point of absurdity. But every now and then you look up and see something like this…

IMG_5226

And the only thing you can say is “what the…”.

IMG_5229

The mix of colours constantly changing.

IMG_5236

The vivid orange grabs your attention. I love that, and have many sunset pictures with brilliant orange, but the combination of orange and blue really stands out for me.

IMG_5244

IMG_5248

I find myself thinking of pictures of the great storm on Jupiter. And right about then, I lose all perspective.

IMG_5258

I love it…

Identical Opposites

Snow. We have lots of it today. That often happens when it warms up, and this week is no exception. But it’s still cold enough for the snow to form drifts, and when it’s sunny, that creates some wonderful “sparkling” images.

IMG_6822

IMG_6828

The drifts remind me of the sand in Wadi Rum.

IMG_3275

Perhaps not identical, but very similar – and most certainly the opposite.

IMG_3270

Okay, maybe I’m stretching the point here, but I can’t help but think of the desert warmth when I look out my window and see this…

IMG_6843.JPG

And it’s hard to believe I could be swimming in a few months when I see this.

IMG_6841

I think I must be ready for spring.

You Know it’s Been Cold When…

Early February was unusually warm this year – at least by Ottawa standards. But that all changed last week.

IMG_6757

Then yesterday the wind died down and it warmed up to -19C, which is getting close to zero F. In the sunshine, it felt positively balmy. And yes, that is how you know it has been cold. So of course we went skating.

IMG_6759

In February Ottawa has a winter festival, called Winterlude. The festival centers around the canal which runs through the center of the city. In the summer it’s used by pleasure boats. In the winter it freezes and it is opened for skating. Every night it’s cleaned and flooded to keep the ice smooth-ish. When the temperature drops, the crowds thin out noticeably, which is why it is so open in this picture. But if you have this many people at -19C you can imagine how crowded it would be if it was warmer.

The canal starts at the Chateau Laurier, a hotel in the city center that looks rather like – you guessed it – a chateau.

IMG_6764

Of course, skating on the canal would not be the authentic experience if you didn’t stop for Beavertails. No, not real beaver tails, but they are about the right shape, and a very tasty pastry with cinnamon sugar. You cannot go wrong.

IMG_6785

We went late in the afternoon, so we were treated to a beautiful sunset with the sky on fire.

IMG_6794

The reflection from the setting sun made this jet look like it actually was on fire. Fortunately it wasn’t.

IMG_6804

I’ll close with a couple shots of the sky and the lights along the canal. The crowds don’t really start to thin out until 9 or 10 at night.

IMG_6807

IMG_6815

You should visit if you ever have the chance. But dress warmly.

Rain

After five days of sunshine, this morning we woke up to light rain.

IMG_6672

Given the extended drought in California, the locals were all pretty happy about the rain. All we had planed for the day was wine tasting, so we were okay with the rain as well. Our first stop was Gloria Ferrer. We ordered it with dinner last night, and decided that tasting it at the winery, along with local cheeses and charcuterie, would be a good plan. Lunch in Sonoma.

IMG_6676

By now, you will not be surprised to hear that we were on the lookout for flowers in bloom, and they were not hard to find.

IMG_6682

IMG_6690

IMG_6696

To be honest, the rain cuts both ways. On the one hand, it obscures the views, but on the other hand, it adds a sense of mystery to the hills when you can see them.

IMG_6716

And I love the rain drops on the flowers.

IMG_6698

IMG_6723

And something, which I gather has been a rare sight in California lately – running water.

IMG_6730

The day ended the way it began, with a gentle rain. So I’ll finish this post the way I started it – with a picture of moss covered trees in the rain.

IMG_6735

Okay, not quite the end of the day. We finished with a glass of a Carneros sparkler.

IMG_6742

A fitting end to our last full day in Sonoma.

Sonoma

We rented a car this morning, and headed north from San Francisco into wine country. I suppose, to be more precise,I should say that we picked up the car we rented several weeks ago. Good thing too. If we had tried to rent a car today, we would have been out of luck. It’s because of Superbowl. Still 10 days to go before the big event, and already there is a shortage of hotel rooms and rental cars. Restaurants are still okay, but I’m sure that will change soon enough. Fortunately we escaped from the bustle of the city to the quiet of Sonoma, and just in time. Funny how you only notice the noise of the city when you leave it behind.

IMG_6665

You see vineyards everywhere, but we are noticing that Sonoma is known for more than just wine. It appears there is a growing olive oil industry as well, though clearly nothing like the scale of the wine industry. Still…

IMG_6653

And of course, flowers. Oh so many flowers. We have to enjoy every one of them because we know that another two months of snow awaits us at home.

IMG_6645

IMG_6658

The last several days have been clear and dry, but today we saw fog and light drizzle for most of the afternoon. I’m not complaining though, because it makes the vineyards and the hills more intense, not to mention the plants.

IMG_6647And of course, the damp encourages the moss, in this case on the Eucalyptus trees.

IMG_6657

But we mustn’t forget that the main reason we are here is for the vines. (Well, technically for the wines, but they tend to go together.) I have seen vines described as “gnarly” and it doesn’t take long to figure out why.

For today’s post, special thanks goes to Jan who wandered around taking most of these photos while I was busy tasting wines. It’s a tough job, but someone has to do it.

San Francisco

IMG_6492

No – this is not San Francisco. This is the view from my window in Ottawa as I was packing on Sunday. It has been cold enough, for long enough, that my neighbour has been able to build a skating rink in his back yard. Needless to say, conditions in San Francisco are somewhat different. More like this…

IMG_6503

IMG_6504

And of course, the architecture, which is somewhat more interesting, and less … frigid.

IMG_6500

IMG_6522

I’m here on business, so I haven’t had much of an opportunity to get out just yet, other than taking walks at lunch. But I did manage to get this picture.

IMG_6516

Fortunately I’m finished working now, and we have 3 days to head up to Napa and Sonoma. I’m looking forward to posting about that soon.

Jerash Revisited

Today I’m going back to my Jordan visit last spring. This was my fourth visit to Jerash. It is an absolutely amazing place, and I highly recommend a visit if you ever have the chance. Jerash provides many stunning images of Roman ruins – one of my favorite topics. But instead of the typical images of Jerash I will try to show it from a different perspective, but first, I’ll set the stage. Jerash is known for the incredible number of columns that have remained standing, in spite of being in an active earthquake zone. This is a classic view of Jerash, but note the one thing missing – people…

IMG_2591

One thing I love about Jordan is that you are free to wander off the beaten path and find views like this…IMG_2687

Or this…

IMG_2745

And you have the opportunity to examine the ruins up close.

IMG_2766

As you wander around the site, you see the ruins from many different angles, and the effect can be quite dramatic. From a distance you see this…

IMG_2603

But when you get closer, you see this…

IMG_2714

Which then turns into this as you walk away …

IMG_2817

And of course, I can’t resist closing with flowers, because that is what everyone expects to see in Jordan. Not.

IMG_2648

IMG_2678

IMG_2741

Okay – maybe one last picture of the columns.

Not Fair

It’s the second week of January, and the view from our front door looks like this…

IMG_6490

If we are very lucky, this will only last for another two and a half months. I don’t want to even consider the possibility that we could be unlucky, as we were last winter. But instead of dwelling on that prospect, I’m going to show a few more pictures from our Mexico trip barely six weeks ago. Somehow it seems much longer…

Almost Prehistoric

Back to more pictures from Mexico today. On our November visit we noticed a really interesting tree, that looked almost like a fern – a bit like what I imagine you might have seen in a prehistoric swamp. I’ll post a few photos for you to see. I’d love to know what the name of the tree is, if anyone is familiar with it.

IMG_6119

Here is a closeup of the leaves.

IMG_6099

… and the flowers.

IMG_6044

It had giant, foot-long seed pods.

IMG_6264

And here is one final shot, putting it all together.

IMG_6352

Let me know if you have any idea what kind of tree this is.

Name That Country

See if you can guess where these pictures were taken. First, let’s start with the resort.

IMG_3561

… with a perfect beach-front location …

IMG_3571

… complete with water sports …

IMG_3614

… flowering trees …

IMG_3651

… and a quiet balcony overlooking the sea at the end of the day.

IMG_3653

The perfect location for a meeting of The Other Champagne Club.

IMG_3677

Can you guess?

If you didn’t immediately think of Jordan, you would not be alone. But that is in fact exactly where these pictures were taken – Aqaba Jordan this past April. Jordan is truly a wonderful country, and in so many ways completely different than what most people expect.
