Another day of touring in Jordan. Another day of stunning archeological sites. Another day of having it all to ourselves. One of the things that I love about Jordan’s history is the fact that we can actually go in and touch it; experience history. One tiny example. We visited a tower built by the stylite monks; one of only two remaining in the world. These monks built stone towers where they could spend up to two years contemplating the divine in peace and solitude. We experienced similar solitude on our visit, having the site entirely to ourselves, in spite of the fact that it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

From UNESCO’s description of the site, it sounds like both of the stylite towers are at Um er-Rasas.
“Two square towers are probably the only remains of the practice, well known in this part of the world, of the stylites.”
“Further to the north… is the uniquely complete tower accommodation of the stylite monks.”

Our guide book claimed there was one other tower like it in Syria. The book is a few years old now, so that might not be the case anymore. I’ll check into it a bit more and let you know.
Well if I can’t be there then, I’ll enjoy the narrative and photos. Long ago, we had opportunity to visit UN post on Golan Heights, having travelled northern border of Isreal
Take care and enjoy!
I know that you would have a great time here – it really is an amazing place. Hopefully an opportunity will present itself sometime in the near future.
