Today we drove from Whitianga to Hamilton. It was a relatively modest drive, so we had time for a bit of a side quest. On our Cathedral Cove tour, we spotted something we thought was worth a closer look. Our objective was … wait for it … another fabulous beach, perfect for a barefoot walk.

Sometimes we may give you the impression that New Zealand beaches go on forever. Today, we were able to reach the end of the beach. It was almost as impressive as the beach. Just look at that tree!

Almost as impressive, but not quite. Take another look at the view from the beach.

Here is another view along the beach.

Then it was time to head back for lunch.

We found the perfect spot for lunch, before it was time to get back on the road.

The only slightly negative thing about Whitianga is the road. It is narrow, winding, and mildly terrifying. Fortunately before we left home, we were given Ginger Chews to help settle our stomachs. Thank you Jane, they were much appreciated.
I know I was just complaining about the challenging roads on our drive from Whitianga, but when we reached Hamilton, we realized that maybe we shouldn’t complain. For the past two weeks we have been traveling through the countryside and small towns. The roads may be narrow and winding, but there is one important thing to keep in mind. Traffic is light. This wasn’t the case when we arrived in Hamilton during rush hour today. I think it was more stressful than driving through the Coromandel. Puts things in perspective, I suppose.
I guess it’ll be good to drive North so you can see some beaches! Your descriptions and photos are wonderful. I’m not ruling out a N.Z. adventure in my future travels as you’re rekindling my desire to get back there. Hard to believe that you’re already half way through your visit. Time to head for Paihia and Waitangi. I’m sure you’ll enjoy them just as much as everything you’ve seen so far. Haere pai atu, hoki pai mai!
Hi Jim and Jan!
I’m sorry to not have commented or written until now, but I can assure you that I have been following along with great interest, and have read every blog post you’ve made. Your trip looks absolutely gorgeous and relaxing. The pictures capture the landscape, flora, fauna, adventurous hikes and leisurely beach walks perfectly. Makes me regret not making this happen for us this year – but we couldn’t anyway…passport renewal period has us stalled for a bit.
All is well back here. Nothing major to report. Stu’s been trying to keep beer club going, with pretty good success I’d say. We’ve had a stitching day and a book banter, and the Family Day Ski weekend just ended. The weather and skiing conditions were just perfect. Sunny and -3°C. Olympic events kept those at the lodge entertained as well.
Thinking of you and really enjoying learning what you’re learning and living vicariously through your words and images!
